Frequently Asked Questions
At Yidi Orthodontics, we understand that starting orthodontic treatment comes with a lot of questions. Dr. Yidi and our team are here to make the process smooth and stress-free! Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.

About Orthodontic Treatment
When should my child see an orthodontist?
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends a first orthodontic check-up by age 7. At this age, Dr. Yidi can evaluate your child’s teeth and jaw development, identifying potential issues early. Early monitoring doesn’t always mean early treatment, but it ensures intervention happens at the right time.
Visit our Early Interceptive Orthodontics page for more details.
Is it too late to get braces as an adult?
Not at all! Many of our patients are adults who want to improve their smile, bite, or oral health. With options like clear aligners (such as Invisalign) and aesthetic braces, orthodontic treatment is more discreet and comfortable than ever.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the case. On average, braces or clear aligners are worn for 12-24 months, but Dr. Yidi will provide a personalized timeline based on your specific needs.
Braces vs Invisalign
What’s the difference between braces and clear aligners?
Braces are attached to the teeth and use wires to shift them into place, while clear aligners are removable, nearly invisible, and custom-made to move your teeth gradually. Dr. Yidi will help you decide which option best fits your lifestyle and treatment goals.
Do braces or clear aligners hurt?
You may experience mild discomfort when you first get braces or switch to a new aligner, but this usually fades within a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers and soft foods can help during this adjustment period.
How often do I need to visit the office during treatment?
For braces, visits are typically scheduled every 6-8 weeks to adjust wires and monitor progress. If you’re wearing clear aligners, check-ups may be less frequent, but you’ll still need to see Dr. Yidi regularly to ensure treatment is on track. At Yidi Orthodontics, we also offer a remote monitoring system. This means that even if you live far away, are on vacation, or attending school in a different location, Dr. Yidi can still monitor your treatment virtually. This ensures that you stay on track with your progress, no matter where you are.

Oral Care During Treatment
Can I still eat my favorite foods with braces?
Some foods should be avoided with braces, such as sticky, hard, or chewy items that could damage the brackets. With clear aligners, you can eat whatever you like, but you must remove them before meals and brush your teeth before putting them back in.

Do I still need to see my regular dentist while in treatment?
Yes! Routine dental checkups and cleanings are essential to keeping your teeth and gums healthy throughout orthodontic treatment. Your dentist and Dr. Yidi will work together to ensure your oral health stays on track.
How do I clean my braces or aligners?
For braces, brush and floss carefully around brackets and wires. For aligners, rinse and clean them gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap. At Yidi Orthodontics, we also offer aligner cleaning foam—ask our team for details!

Costs & Insurance

Does insurance cover braces or clear aligners?

After Treatment
Will I need to wear a retainer after braces or Invisalign?
Yes! Retainers help maintain your new smile by keeping your teeth in place after treatment. Dr. Yidi will provide a custom retainer and instructions on how often to wear it.
What happens if I lose my retainer?
If you lose or damage your retainer, contact us as soon as possible. Wearing your retainer as instructed is crucial to keeping your teeth from shifting back.
